Mazdoor Bigul activists in Visakhapatnam carried out a campaign against the Labour Codes at the site of the bank employees’ strike demanding a five-day workweek.

‘The bank employees were, to a large extent, convinced that if the Labour Codes are implemented, the 60-day strike notice requirement would undermine their capacity to struggle as well.

Mazdoor Bigul and the Naujawan Bharat Sabha conducted a campaign against the four labour codes introduced by the central government at the Maddilapalem bus depot and the working class neighbourhood of Pedajalaripeta in Visakhapatnam.

‘They appealed to the RTC workers and employees to put pressure on their respective unions to turn the one-day general strike called by the central trade unions on February 12 into an indefinite general strike. Along with participating in the strike, activists of Bigul and the Naujawan Bharat Sabha also appealed to the working people of Pedajalaripeta to extend support in all possible ways.

‘During discussions, Bigul activists found that many bank employees are not opposing the fascist BJP government’s four labour codes, either due to misinformation spread through mainstream media and social platforms or fear that raising broader issues may weaken their immediate demands.

Mazdoor Bigul activists conducted a campaign against the four new labour codes at the APSRTC Bus Depot, Pedawaltair in Visakhapatnam.

‘This is the biggest attack on the working class in independent India. If such an attack is not confronted with the most powerful weapon available to us, future generations will inevitably be pushed into darkness. Therefore, Mazdoor Bigul activists called upon workers to take up an indefinite general strike until the fascist Modi government withdraws the four anti-worker labour codes

‘The hard earned rights of workers that existed at least on paper until now too are being brazenly taken away through these codes. If we do not resist them now until they are repealed, later, there will be nothing left to fight for. It’s in this context that all the unions should shun their differences to unite to give a call for an indefinite general strike.

‘The meeting was attended by Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) and Bharat Electronic Limited (BEL) workers and employees. Mazdoor Bigul will continue to hold further campaigns and meeting regarding the labour codes and the working class approach towards them.

‘Mazdoor Bigul stated the futility of decades of one-day strikes and appealed to all unions and workers (organised and unorganised) to unite around the call for an indefinite general strike, warning that without sustained resistance the BJP-led regime and the capitalist class will push these laws relentlessly, driving the working class into deeper darkness.

Bigul Mazdoor Dasta organized a talk and discussion at Earthcare Bookstore on the topic ‘Why the Four Labour Codes must be Resisted’.

‘Participants also drew lessons from history, particularly from major working-class struggles such as the Mumbai textile workers’ strike of the 1980s, which demonstrated both the power of organised labour and the lengths to which the state and capital will go to defeat it.
