26 जनवरी को तड़के 3 बजे कोलकाता के आनन्दपुर इलाके में वाउ मोमो और पुष्पांजलि डेकोरेटर्स के गोदामों में आग लग गयी। इससे अभी तक कुल 21 मज़दूरों के मारे जाने की पुष्टि हो चुकी है। 23 अन्य मज़दूर अभी लापता हैं, लेकिन पूरी आशंका है कि तीन दिन से ज़्यादा वक़्त बीत जाने पर अब उनकी अस्थियाँ ही बाहर आएँगी। वाउ मोमो ने दावा किया है कि उनके गोदाम में आग से सुरक्षा के सारे नियमों का पालन किया जा रहा था, मगर हक़ीक़त यह है कि उनका गोदाम पैकेजिंग मटीरियल जैसी आसानी से आग पकड़ने वाली चीज़ों से भरा हुआ था। इसी तरह पुष्पांजलि डेकोरेटर्स के गोदाम में भी इंटीरियर डिज़ाइन से जुड़े ढेरों ज्वलनशील सामान, जैसे कि लकड़ी के पैलेट, प्री-फ़ैब्रिकेटेट दीवार, थर्माकोल, मेटल शीट्स इत्यादि रखे हुए थे। इसके अलावा, स्थानीय लोगों के मुताबिक़ ये ढाँचे आर्द्रभूमि (वेटलैंड) को भरकर बनाए गए हैं। आर्द्रभूमियों पर बने ढाँचे संरचनागत रूप से कमज़ोर हो सकते हैं और आग लगने की हालत में सापेक्षतः जल्दी ढह सकते हैं और साथ ही, भराई के दौरान उनमें बेहद ज्वलनशील मीथेन गैस फँसी हो सकती है जो आग लगने की 
सूरत में बाहर आने पर आग को और फैला सकती है। कहने को तो क़ानून के हिसाब से कलकत्ता में आर्द्रभूमियों पर निर्माण कार्य वर्जित है, लेकिन ये खुला रहस्य है कि बिल्डरों और गोदाम मालिकों जैसे धनपशुओं, नौकरशाही और बुर्जुआ राजनीतिक दलों की मिलीभगत से ऐसे नियमों की आए दिन धज्जियाँ कैसे उड़ती रहती हैं। आख़िर ऐसा हादसा पहली बार नहीं हुआ है और अफ़सोस कि पूँजीवाद के रहते यह आख़िरी भी नहीं है। पूरे देश के किसी भी शहर को लिया जाए, ऐसे “हादसे” होते ही रहते हैं। कोलकाता में ही इससे पहले स्टीफ़न कोर्ट और एएमआरआई अस्पताल में आग लगने से क्रमशः 89 और 43 लोग मारे जा चुके हैं। क्या उन घटनाओं से प्रशासन को सीख लेकर सभी गोदामों और कारखानों इत्यादि की नियमित जाँच का इंतज़ाम नहीं करना चाहिए था? मगर पूँजीपतियों की सेवा में जी जान से जुटी सरकारें और उनकी नौकरशाही से ऐसी उम्मीद करना बेमानी होगी। सभी जानते हैं कि हमारे देश में मज़दूरों के लिए जैसे-तैसे, यहाँ तक कि ज्वलनशील सामान के बीच सोने का इंतज़ाम किया जान आम बात है, क्योंकि पूँजीवाद में वे सिर्फ़ मशीनों के ही कलपुर्जे की तरह होते हैं और उनकी अहमियत सिर्फ़ उनकी श्रम शक्ति को निचोड़कर मुनाफ़ा बनाए जाने तक सीमित होती है। यही वजह है कि पूरे मामले से पल्ला झाड़ने के लिए पूरा पूँजीवादी तन्त्र हरक़त में आ चुका है और कामगारों के परिवारों समेत आम लोगों के गुस्से को फ़ौरी तौर पर शान्त करने के लिए सरकार ने मृतकों के परिवारजनों के लिए राहत पैकेज की घोषणा की है और दोनों गोदामों के मालिक, गंगाधर दास को रिमांड पर लिया गया है। लेकिन मज़दूर वर्ग अपने तजुर्बे से जानता है कि यह सबकुछ बस तूफ़ान के गुज़र जाने तक की पैंतरेबाज़ी है। पश्चिम बंगाल की मुख्य विरोधी दल, भाजपा भी मौका भुनाने के लिए विरोध कर रही है, लेकिन टीएमसी और भाजपा की ये कुत्ताघसीटी सिर्फ़ बुर्जुआ चुनाव प्रणाली में अपनी गोटियाँ सेंकने के लिए है। मज़दूरों का खून पसीना नोचने के सवाल पर इन सारे के सारे दलों में आम सहमति है। केन्द्र में सत्तारूढ़ भाजपा के द्वारा पारित की गई चार श्रम संहिताओं में ‘व्यावसायिक सुरक्षा, स्वास्थ्य एवं कार्य स्थितियाँ संहिता, 2020’ में तो आगजनी से निपटने से जुड़े सारे प्रावधान सरकार द्वारा जारी सूचनाओं पर छोड़ दिए गए हैं, यानी मज़दूर वर्ग के पास वैधानिक अधिकार नहीं होंगे, बल्कि वह पूँजीपति वर्ग की मैनेजमेंट कमिटी, बुर्जुआ सरकारों के रहमोकरम पर निर्भर होगा। इसलिए हम तात्कालिक तौर पर बंगाल सरकार से माँग करते हैं कि वह इस सामूहिक हत्याकांड के लिए ज़िम्मेदार पूँजीपतियों के ऊपर द्रुत गति से कार्रवाई करते हुए उन्हें सख़्त से सख़्त सज़ा दिलवाए, मज़दूरों के परिवारजन को नागरिक स्वयंसवेक का झुनझुना देने के बजाय उन्हें एक पक्की नौकरी दे, और मुआवज़े की रक़म 10 लाख से बढ़ाकर आने वाले दशकों की अपेक्षित महँगाई दर को ध्यान में रखते हुए उनके आजीवन सम्मानजनक ग़ुज़ारे के हिसाब से करे। समूचे मज़दूर एवं कर्मचारी वर्ग से हमारा आह्वान है कि हम फ़ौरी तौर पर चारों श्रम संहिताओं को वापस करवाने के संघर्ष के लिए एकजुट हों और इस समूचे पूँजीवादी तन्त्र को नेस्तनाबूद करने की दीर्घकालिक लड़ाई के लिए भी कमर कस लें।

The deaths of workers in the fire that engulfed the warehouses of Wow Momo and Pushpanjali Decorators in Kolkata are not an accident, but a mass murder at the hands of this system! Overthrowing this capitalist system is the only alternative!
In the early hours of January 26th, at 3 AM, a fire broke out in the warehouses of Wow Momo and Pushpanjali Decorators in the Anandapur area of Kolkata. So far, 21 workers have been confirmed dead. 23 other workers are still missing, but it is highly likely that after more than three days, only their remains will be recovered. Wow Momo claims that all fire safety regulations were being followed in their warehouse, but the reality is that their warehouse was filled with materials like packaging materials which easily catch fire. Similarly, the Pushpanjali Decorators warehouse also contained numerous flammable materials related to interior design, such as wooden pallets, pre-fabricated walls, thermocol, metal sheets, etc. Furthermore, according to local residents, these structures were built by filling in wetlands. Structures built on wetlands can be structurally weak and may collapse relatively quickly in the event of a fire. Also, highly flammable methane gas can be trapped during the filling process, which, if released during a fire, can further spread the flames. Although construction on wetlands is prohibited in Kolkata according to the law, it is an open secret how these rules are routinely violated through the collusion of wealthy builders and warehouse owners, the bureaucracy, and bourgeois political parties. This is not the first such incident, and sadly, it will not be the last as long as capitalism persists. Such “accidents” happen regularly in cities across the country. Earlier in Kolkata, fires at Stephen Court and AMRI Hospital had claimed 89 and 43 lives respectively. Shouldn’t the administration have learned from those incidents and implemented regular inspections of all warehouses and factories? But expecting such action from governments and their bureaucracies, which are wholeheartedly dedicated to serving the capitalists, would be futile. Everyone knows that in our country, it’s common for workers to be forced to sleep in makeshift arrangements, even amidst flammable materials, because under capitalism, they are merely cogs in the machine, and their value is limited to the profit extracted from their labor. This is why the entire capitalist system has sprung into action to wash its hands of the matter, and to immediately quell the anger of the general public, including the families of the workers, the government has announced a relief package for the families of the deceased, and the owner of both warehouses, Gangadhar Das, has been taken into custody. But the working class knows from experience that all this is just a temporary maneuver until the storm passes. The main opposition party in West Bengal, the BJP, is also doing lipservice to capitalize on the situation, but this squabble between the TMC and the BJP is merely for their own political gain within the bourgeois electoral system. All these parties have a common consensus on the issue of exploiting the blood and sweat of the workers. In the ‘Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020’, one of the four labor codes passed by the ruling BJP at the center, all provisions related to dealing with fire incidents have been left to government notifications, meaning the working class will not have statutory rights, but will be dependent on the mercy of the management committee of the capitalist class, the bourgeois governments. Therefore, we immediately demand that the West Bengal government take swift action against the capitalists responsible for this massacre and ensure they receive the harshest possible punishment, instead of offering the civic volunteer jobs as a mere token gesture of support, the government must provide the families of the deceased workers with permanent jobs, and it should also increase the compensation amount from 10 lakhs to a sum that will ensure a dignified livelihood for them for the rest of their lives, taking into account the expected inflation rate over the coming decades. We call upon the entire working class and all employees to unite immediately in the struggle to repeal the Four Labor Codes and to prepare themselves for the long-term fight to dismantle this entire capitalist system.
