Poem : The Robber and His Servant
Bertolt Brecht
Two robbers were plundering the province of Hesse,
Many a peasant’s neck they broke.
One was as thin as a hungry wolf,
And the other as fat as the pope.
But what made their bodies so different?
Because they were servant and master.
The master swigged the cream off the milk,
The servant got his milk already sour.
So then the peasants caught the robbers,
And when they hung by one rope,
One hung there as thin as a hungry wolf,
And one as fat as the pope.
The peasants stood there crossing themselves,
And staring at the two.
They saw that the fat man was a robber,
But why was the thin man one too?
