विदा कॉमरेड सोहल! तनी मुट्ठियों से लाल सलाम!

20 अक्‍टूबर को कॉमरेड जगजीत सिंह सोहल का पटियाला में निधन हो गया। वे 96 वर्ष के थे। उनका जन्‍म संगरूर के शाहपुर गांव में हुआ था। वे बेहद कम उम्र में ही कम्‍युनिस्‍ट आन्‍दोलन में सक्रिय हो गये थे और अविभाजि‍त कम्‍युनिस्‍ट पार्टी के ज़माने में हरकिशन सिंह सुरजीत, सत्‍यपाल डांग, व जागीर सिंह जोगा जैसे कॉमरेडों के साथ काम कर चुके थे। नक्‍सलबाड़ी क्रान्तिकारी उभार के बाद जब पूरे देश में संशोधनवाद से निर्णायक विच्‍छेद की लहर चल पड़ी तो पंजाब में कॉमरेड दया सिंह, कॉमरेड हरिसिंह मृगेन्‍द्र, बाबा भुजा सिंह आदि के साथ इस लहर को आगे बढ़ाने में कॉमरेड सोहल की अग्रणी भूमिका थी।

कम्‍युनिस्‍ट क्रान्तिकारी नेता जगजीत सिंह सोहल भारत के मार्क्‍सवादी-लेनिनवादी कम्‍युनिस्‍ट क्रान्तिकारी आन्‍दोलन के नेतृत्‍व की पहली पीढ़ी के अन्तिम बचे हुए सदस्‍य थे। उन्‍हें भारत के कम्‍युनिस्‍ट आन्‍दोलन में ‘शर्मा जी’ के नाम से जाना जाता था। 1970 में जब भारत की कम्‍युनिस्‍ट पार्टी (मार्क्‍सवादी-लेनिनवादी) का गठन हुआ, तो कॉमरेड सोहल उसकी केन्‍द्रीय कमेटी के सदस्‍य थे। 1974 में जब केन्‍द्रीय सांगठनिक कमेटी, भाकपा (माले) का गठन हुआ और इसने बिखरे हुए कम्युनिस्‍ट क्रान्तिकारी संगठनों और ग्रुपों को एकजुट करने की पहल ली, तो कॉमरेड सोहल इस नये संगठन के महासचिव बने। पंजाब के शीर्ष कम्‍युनिस्‍ट क्रान्तिकारी नेताओं में कॉमरेड सोहल की गणना की जाती थी। कॉमरेड सोहल ने यद्यपि “वाम” दुस्‍साहसवाद और क्रान्तिकारी जनदिशा के बीच स्‍पष्‍ट अवस्थिति लेकर खड़े होने की जगह उस दौर में किसी हद तक ढुलमुल रवैया अपनाया था, लेकिन फिर भी वह क्रान्तिकारी “वाम” दुस्‍साहसवाद की धारा से अलग रहे और उसका विरोध भी करते रहे, हालाँकि बाद के दौर में उनकी राजनीति “वामपंथी” दुस्‍साहसवाद की इसी धारा के साथ एकरूप हो गयी। इन विचारधारात्‍मक कमज़ोरियों के बावजूद, कॉमरेड सोहल की कम्‍युनिस्‍ट ईमानदारी, दृढ़ता और क्रान्तिकारी स्पिरिट निष्‍कम्‍प और अकुण्‍ठ थी और देश के पूरे कम्‍युनिस्‍ट क्रान्तिकारी आन्‍दोलन में इसके लिए वे जीवनपर्यन्‍त सम्‍माननीय बने रहे। कॉमरेड सोहल का निधन भारत के कम्‍युनिस्‍ट आन्‍दोलन के इतिहास के एक दौर का समापन है। हम भरे दिल और तनी मुट्ठियों के साथ कॉमरेड सोहल को अन्तिम विदाई का लाल सलाम पेश करते हैं।

Red Salute with Clenched Fists!

On October 20, Comrade Jagjit Singh Sohal passed away in Patiala at the age of 96. He was born in Shahpur village, Sangrur, and became active in the Communist movement at a very young age. Over the years, he worked alongside prominent comrades such as Harkishan Singh Surjeet, Satyapal Dang, and Jagir Singh Joga during the period of the undivided Communist Party.
After the revolutionary uprising in Naxalbari, when a decisive wave against revisionism swept the country, Comrade Sohal played a leading role in advancing this struggle in Punjab, alongside comrades like Daya Singh, Hari Singh Mrigendra, and Baba Bhuja Singh.
Jagjit Singh Sohal was the last surviving member of the first generation of leaders in India’s Marxist-Leninist communist revolutionary movement. He was known as “Sharma Ji” within the movement. In 1970, when the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) was constituted, he was a member of its Central Committee. When the Central Organisational Committee, CPI (ML), was established in 1974 and it undertook the task of uniting various scattered communist revolutionary organizations and groups, Comrade Sohal served as its General Secretary. He was widely regarded as one of the foremost communist revolutionary leaders in Punjab. Although Comrade Sohal initially adopted an indecisive and vascillating stance instead of taking a clear position between “left” adventurism and revolutionary massline, he remained distant from the “left” adventurist stream and continued to oppose it. However, later in life, his politics eventually aligned and unified with this very “left” adventurist stream. Despite these ideological weaknesses, Comrade Sohal was respected for his unwavering and steadfast communist honesty, determination and revolutionary spirit throughout his life in the communist revolutionary movement of India.
The passing of Comrade Sohal marks the end of an era in the history of India’s communist movement. With heavy hearts and clenched fists, we offer a final red salute to Comrade Sohal.
